The Haryana Government has decided to reward those who provide accurate information to help prevent the vice of female foeticide with up to Rs 1 lakh. The identity of the informants will be kept confidential by the Health Department.

A government spokesperson stated that under the PC-PNDT Act, 1994, registered centre operators and doctors involved in pre-conception sex selection and pre-natal sex determination, would be punished with imprisonment of three years and a fine of Rs 10,000 for the first time. For repeat offences, there is a provision of five years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000.

Under the PC-PNDT Act, for the husband/family member or any person who instigates gender selection, the punishment for the first offence is imprisonment of up to three years and a fine of up to Rs 50,000. For subsequent offences, the punishment is jail for up to five years with a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.

The spokesperson said that in order to address the declining sex ratio in districts and achieve gender equality, all citizens must come together and make efforts to bring the issue to the forefront.
