Over the past few years, boxing has emerged as one of the most popular sports in the district, with nearly 100 boys and girls sweating it out in the boxing rings every morning and evening.
The boxing rings of Karna Stadium present a lively picture — filled with thuds of gloves and echo of coaches’ instructions. Among the guiding voices are coaches Surender Chauhan, Sandeep and Ravi Lather, who have been training a new generation of boxers.
Speaking about the growing enthusiasm among youngsters, Chauhan said, “The players here are extremely committed. Whatever training task is given to them, they complete it with full sincerity. Many of our boxers have gone on to perform brilliantly at the national and international levels, making both Karnal and the country proud.”
He added that both boys and girls are showing equal zeal for the sport. “It is inspiring to see young girls entering the boxing ring with the same determination as boys. Their confidence and strength are a true reflection of changing times,” he said.
Coach Chauhan proudly mentioned the name of Nishant Dev, who has represented India at international boxing championships including Olympics. “Nishant has made Karnal proud at the global level. Now, our young boxers Ganga, Manshi, Tamanna and Gorish are among the players, who are following in the footsteps of Nishant,” said Chauhan.
Several boxers from Karnal have already secured government jobs through their sports achievements, inspiring others to take up the sport seriously. Chauhan believes that the increasing interest of youths in boxing is a positive sign for society. “Children from both the city and nearby villages are taking up sports seriously. When I see their fitness, discipline and enthusiasm, it gives me hope that the future of boxing in Karnal is bright,” he added.
Young pugilists believe that sports like boxing play a major role in keeping youth away from drugs and unhealthy habits. “Games help us stay focused and disciplined. Boxing gives us strength, confidence and a goal in life. It is a way to prove that we can achieve more through dedication than shortcut,” said Angel, one of the players practicing at the stadium, who has been selected for the National School Games.
Besides, Sameer and Nikita have been selected for the National School Games and will be the part of Haryana’s team.
