The important decision in the final draft is to retain the existing numbering of wards unchanged. Initially, the draft proposed changes in ward numbering, but objections from few aspirants led to the decision to keep the numbering unchanged. The number of wards will also remain unchanged and it is 20.

“The number of wards is 20 and the numbering will remain unchanged,” said the DMC.

As per the final draft notification, there are some changes in the boundaries of a couple of wards, while the remaining ward remained unchanged. The delimitation of wards has been done on the basis of population shown in the data of Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP), which shows the population of Karnal city as approximately 3.27 lakh.

The draw to decide the category of reservation for the Mayor's post in Karnal has already been completed by the state government. The post has been kept open to candidates from all backgrounds. However, the draw for reserving specific wards for various categories — Scheduled Castes (SC), Backward Classes (BC-A, BC-B), Women and SC Women — is yet to be conducted.

The reservation draw is expected to take place in the first week of January. Once finalised, it will give clarity on which wards will be reserved for specific categories.

Vaishali Sharma, Commissioner, KMC, said the draw for the reservation of wards would be conducted by January 5.
