When approved by the state Cabinet in 2023, the project was pegged at Rs 5,400 crore. Its cost has now escalated to over Rs 8,000 crore. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024, followed by a ‘bhumi poojan’ performed by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Minister ML Khattar recently.
GMDA officials attributed the delays largely to the prolonged finalisation of modalities of Gurugram Metro Rail Limited.
“I held a review of infrastructure projects like the Metro, the reasons for delay, and their implications both financial and developmental. Officials have been directed to ensure there is no further delay as it burdens state resources and public welfare,” Rao Inderjit Singh said after the meeting.
The minister also suggested exploring the possibility of connecting Dwarka Expressway and Kherki Daula to the airport through Metro, and ordered a ridership survey for the same.
Officials informed him that civil tenders for 15 km of the proposed corridor have already been finalised, while tenders for the remaining 13 km will be completed soon.
It may be recalled that Rao has already sought an inquiry from the CM into the reasons behind the repeated delays.
The proposed 28.5-km corridor will provide Metro connectivity to old Gurugram and is targeted for completion by December 2028. It will have eight model stations, with 35 trains — each with three coaches — running at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
The first station on the corridor will be at Sector 45, located beyond the Millennium City Centre Gurugram station, followed by Cyber Park, Sector 47, Subhash Chowk, Sector 48, Sector 72A, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar Phase VI, Sector 10, Sector 37, Basai Village, Sector 9, Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23A, Sector 22, Udyog Vihar Phases IV & V, and Cyber Hub. In the first phase, the Metro will be extended up to Sector 9, covering 15.5 km.
