The Gurugram police have booked a man for assault on a newspaper hawker. Police official said that the accused threatened to kill the victim for not paying extortion money for newspaper distribution in the area.

The police said the victim was admitted to the hospital for treatment, adding that on the basis of the complaint of the hawker, an FIR was registered at the Kherki Daula police station.

The police said the victim, Maha Singh of Bhangrola village, told them he distributed newspapers in Sector 82 area. Police officials said in his complaint to the victim that he told them that at around 5.45 am on Sunday he was collecting newspapers in the town square. Meanwhile, Maharam, a resident of the Shikohpur village, came in a car. The victim said Maharam was accompanied by another man in a separate vehicle. He said as soon as Maharam got down from the car, he attacked him with an iron rod.

Maharam also threatened that if Rs 30,000 were not given every month for supplying newspapers, Maha Singh would have to lose his life. When Maha Singh’s other companions arrived, Maharam and his companions fled.

The police said investigation in the case was on, adding that they were trying to arrest the accused.
