Gurugram to start 40-day session to shape up obese police personnel
Overweight police personnel or those with pot bellies in Gurugram will get a chance to regain their fitness. As per the directions of the DGP Haryana, Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora has directed the DCP Headquarters to start a 40-day special physical training session for such cops.
Physical fitness of policemen directly affects the quality and effectiveness of their work. The Gurugram Police have launched a special plan to help overweight policemen stationed at various police stations get fit. Under this plan, obese policemen will be identified in 10 days. Later, they will be put on a special fitness plan for 40 days.
A senior police officer said obese policemen often find it difficult to chase down criminals. Last year, an initiative to identify obese policemen was started at the state level, but it could not take off.
In June 2022, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had asked the DGPs of Punjab and Haryana to seek lists of obese police personnel from all SPs. The directive came following reports that overweight police personnel were unable to chase down or catch suspects in drugs and excise cases.
Last year, only a few policemen were sent to the Police Lines to get fit. However this year, Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora issued instructions for cops to take part in the fitness programme.
Under the programme, obese cops will have to follow a routine in the morning daily. It will include yoga, gym and running. “The aim behind the special physical training session for obese policemen is to improve their fitness so that they can do their work more effectively. Hope this plan proves beneficial for our policemen,” said CP Vikas Kumar Arora.
