Karnal, June 17

On the last day of campaigning, candidates for the post of chairperson as well as councillors at seven civic bodies of Karnal and Kaithal districts gave the final push to their campaign to convince the electorate to vote for them. Polling will be held on June 19.

Few of the candidates preferred taking the traditional route with ‘padyatras’ (foot marches) and some held roadshows to show their strength. A couple of them held meetings with people and some went door to door.

Nilokheri MLA Dharampal Gonder campaigns for Independent candidate Virender Bansal for the post of Taraori MC chairperson.

In Kaithal Municipal Council election which is being watched keenly, Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala campaigned for Independent candidate Adarsh Thareja. BJP leader and HAFED chairman Kailash Bhagat took out a ‘padyatra’ in Kaithal city to seek vote for the party candidate Surbhi Garg. Both the candidates promised people overall development of the city.

Sitting Guhla MLA and JJP leader Ishwar Singh gave a final push to the campaign of his daughter-in-law Rekha Rani’s election who is contesting on the JJP ticket at Cheeka MC. On the same seat, BJP leader and former MLA Kulwant Bazigar sought votes for his daughter-in-law Kailasho Devi alias Kailash Kaur, who is contesting as an Independent candidate.

In Nissing, BJP leader Janak Popli, who is contesting as an Independent candidate, held a roadshow accompanied by BJP leaders, workers and prominent residents of the town. He is promising corruption-free system if voted to power. “If voted to power, I will eliminate corruption. I will ensure overall development of Nissing town,” said Popli.

Nilokheri MLA Dharampal Gonder-backed Independent candidate Rommy Singla campaigned door to door to seek votes. He also promised inclusive development.

Political experts consider that Taraori MC chairperson’s election could be a close contest. The prestige of sitting Nilokheri MLA Dharampal Gonder and former BJP MLA Bhagwan Das Kabirpanthi is at stake. Dharampal held a roadshow in support of Independent candidate Virender Bansal and former Nilokheri MLA Kabirpanthi took out a ‘padyatra’ in support of BJP candidate Rajiv Narang.

In Gharaunda MC elections, BJP MP Sanjay Bhatia, Gharaunda MLA Harvinder Kalyan, Mayor Karnal Renu Bala Gupta, Panipat Rural MLA Mahipal Dhanda took out a ‘padyatra’ in the city for party candidate for the post of chairman Happy Luck Gupta. AAP candidate Surinder Singla took out a road show with his supporters carrying brooms. Political experts see a neck-and-neck contest here at this seat.

AAP leaders held meetings in Nissing, Gharaunda, Taraori and Assandh for their candidates Megh Raj, Surinder Singla, Arpit Popli and Sonia Bohat respectively.
