The name of a Bachelor of Physiotherapy student has emerged in connection with the MBBS exam scam at Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak (UHSR). The scam allegedly involved securing pass marks for MBBS students through fraudulent means in exchange for money.

The student is accused of earning over Rs 86 lakh by manipulating examination award lists to help MBBS students from a private college pass. The alleged involvement of a student from another course indicates that the scam may not be limited to the MBBS exam, but could potentially extend to other examinations as well, said sources.

One of the three key accused, during police interrogation, revealed that a deal was struck with the student for Rs 2 lakh per candidate to secure pass marks for three candidates from the 2021 batch through the “direct system”. All three passed the exam. “I gave him Rs 4.05 lakh and kept Rs 1.95 lakh for myself,” the accused claimed, according to the sources.

The term “direct system” in the scam refers to manipulation of the award list prepared prior to the declaration of the results. The accused struck another deal with the physiotherapy student to help some candidates from the 2020 batch pass using the direct system. “I gave him Rs 32 lakh and kept Rs 16 lakh for myself. In another deal, I collected a total of Rs 1 crore from some MBBS students of the 2021 and 2022 batches to get them passed. We then split the amount equally,” the accused revealed during the police interrogation.

Besides the direct system, another tactic was used by the racketeers. Answer sheets were smuggled out from the university’s secrecy branch, rewritten and then re-submitted for evaluation.

As many as 41 individuals — 24 MBBS students of a private college and 17 UHSR employees — were booked in February in the scam.
