Water entered the shops, houses, schools and hospitals situated in the low-lying localities in the city, adding to the woes of the residents.
Rain also wreaked havoc with the already damaged roads, leading to creation of new potholes and enlargement of the existing ones.
“It became impossible for one to walk on the roads as up to 2 ft of rainwater accumulated near Chhotu Ram Chowk located in the heart of the city. Many vehicles also developed snags while passing through the waterlogged roads,” said Naresh, a resident.
Shalini, a housewife, stated that she fell down and got injured as her scooty got disbalanced due to a pothole on a road near the new bus stand. “I could not see the pothole as it was submerged in rainwater,” she lamented.
Patients, schoolchildren and officer-goers also had to face multifarious problems due to constant rain and accumulated water.
Overflowing sewage mixed with accumulated rainwater deepened the plight of the hapless residents. “Water getting accumulated on roads and streets after every spell of rain clearly indicates big lapses in the maintenance of sewerage and stormwater disposal systems. The authorities concerned should realise their responsibility towards the people and do the needful in this regard,” said RD Sharma, a local entrepreneur.
The traffic police personnel had a tough time regulating the vehicular traffic amid rain and waterlogging. The police personnel, many of whom did not have raincoats or umbrellas, did a commendable job in ensuring smooth movement of traffic on the roads despite getting drenched in the rain themselves.
