A history-sheeter facing 10 criminal cases was shot dead and another person injured when three assailants opened fire on them near Matka Chowk on Sunday afternoon.
Surajbhan Saini alias Raju and another youth, Kuldeep, were playing cards at the taxi stand behind the Inspector General Office (IG) when the incident occurred.
DSP Sanjay Kumar who rushed the spot after the incident said that Raju Saini (36) was a resident of Sishwal village. Kuldeep too suffered bullet injuries.
Eyewitnesses told the police that three youths arrived on a motorcycle and stopped near a group of youths who were playing cards. The trio, armed with pistols, opened fire.
Raju Saini was facing several criminal cases and was a history-sheeter in the police records, the police said, adding that his body bore at least 10 bullets marks as the accused has fired 22 rounds of fires.
The police also recovered one live cartridge from the spot besides 22 empty shells.
Tejpal, a brother of the deceased, lodged a complaint with the police stating that his brother had gone to the taxi stand to meet his friends where he was attacked by the assailants. The police said they have started investigation into the matter and are in the process of registering an FIR.
