Three projects with an estimated cost of Rs 252 crore have been approved to augment the drinking water supply mechanism in Rohtak.

What purposes will these three projects serve?

Under Rs 210-crore project, capacity of waterworks supplying water to Paharawar, Kanheli, Baliyana, Bohar, Sunaria Khurd, Sunaria Kalan and Kheri Sadh villages in Rohtak district will be increased along with repair works. In addition, the waterworks will be directly connected to the Jawaharlal Nehru Canal passing through Rohtak. Under Rs 16.35-crore project, damaged or worn-out drinking water pipelines will be replaced. Similarly, under Rs 26-crore project, a rising main from the waterworks on Sonepat Road to the Jawaharlal Nehru Canal and an SS tank will be constructed, along with other works.

When will these projects be commissioned?

Rohtak Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta said all three projects had already been approved by the state government and work on these is likely to begin shortly.

Why were these projects necessitated?

The residents of Rohtak have been facing shortage of clean and adequate drinking water for a long time. There have been numerous complaints regarding the supply of dirty, smelly and contaminated potable water. Residents of certain pockets, including even posh colonies like Model Town and DLF Colony, have been forced to buy water for drinking. The shortage of water becomes more acute in summers, triggering protests by residents. Different social and political organisations had launched a joint mass campaign to press for the provision of clean and adequate drinking water before the last Assembly poll. Not just the Opposition leaders, but even the leaders and people’s representatives of the ruling party allege shortage of clean and adequate drinking water in the rural as well as urban areas of

the district.

What steps were taken earlier by the authorities concerned?

The district administration had organised a series of special camps in different parts of Rohtak city to hear and assess the water-related complaints of locals last year. A plan was also made to enhance the storage capacity of the existing waterworks and construct new waterworks to cater to the increasing demand of drinking water.

Is there any specific time frame for the projects?

Rohtak Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta asserts that significant changes will be visible in the drinking-water supply and other public facilities in the city within

a month.
