Hundreds of participants participated in the ‘Gita Run’, organised as part of the International Gita Mahotsav (IGM) 2025 celebrations, here in Kurukshetra on Sunday.

The participants gathered at the Purushottam Pura Baag of Brahma Sarovar early in the morning and the run, organised by the Kurukshetra Development Board and the district administration, was flagged off by Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma.

The Rajya Sabha MP said Lord Krishna, in his teachings on the Gita, preached to the humanity that one should constantly perform one’s duties. To keep the society rooted in Indian culture, it was crucial to understand the teachings of the Gita, which were making a significant contribution in preserving Indian tradition.

Sharma stated, “The Gita Run competition was organised on Sunday as part of the IGM celebrations. Everyone should embrace the teachings of the Gita in their lives. It is crucial for young people to participate in sports and understand the teachings of the Gita. Participating in sports maintains our physical health, while understanding the teachings of the Gita will keep our culture alive.”

The ‘Gita Run’ was organised in four categories, including a 10-kilometre run for the youth (men), and 5-kilometre runs for the women category, and senior citizens (men and women) category.

Arjuna Award-winning boxer Manoj Kumar said the youngsters should participate in sport activities. These competitions increase players’ interest in sports, and they should play with a sporting spirit.

Sharma and former Minister of State Subhash Sudha honoured the winners and handed over the cheques to them.

In the men’s 10-kilometrerace, Avkash (Sonepat) was awarded a prize of Rs 31,000 for coming first, Danish (Meerut) was awarded Rs 21,000 for securing second place, and Vinay (Sonepat) was awarded Rs 11,000 for coming third. Similarly, in the women 5-km race, Muskan (Sonepat) got Rs 31,000 for coming first, Anjani Devi (Kurukshetra) got Rs 21,000 for coming second and Sonika (Bhiwani) got Rs 11,000 for coming third. In the senior citizen (men)5-km race, Ishwar Singh (Kurukshetra), was awarded Rs 5,100 for securing first place, Chander Pal (Kurukshetra) Rs 4,100 for securing second position, and Ghanshyam Sharma (Alwar), was awarded Rs 3,100 for coming third. Trilok Nath, who came fourth, was awarded Rs 2,100 and Virbhan was awarded Rs 1,100 for securing fifth position.

In the senior citizen (women) Shamo Devi (Kurukshetra) and Bohti Devi (Kurukshetra) won the first and second positions and they were awarded Rs 5,100 and Rs 4,100, respectively.

On this occasion, BJP district president Tejender Singh Goldy, KDB honorary secretary Upender Singhal, KDB CEO Pankaj Setia and several other officials were present.
