With a view to strengthen the disaster-management mechanism and ensure national security, an extensive civil defence mock drills were organised under “Operation Shield” at different locations in Rohtak on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner Dharmender Singh said such exercises prepared the government officials as well as people for emergency situations.

“It is ensured that the responses are properly coordinated. Through mock drills, we also evaluate the response time, identify our capabilities and improve coordination between various disaster-control departments,” he said.

Singh said the underlying idea behind the exercise was to ensure quick and safe access of relief and rescue teams to the affected place in the event of an emergency. During the mock drill, a siren was sounded along with the information of air raid in the identified area.

Deployment of relief teams, monitoring of roads, provision of emergency medical services/facilities and transportation of the affected persons to safe places were carried out as part of the drill.

Quick activation of the information and communication system and coordination between different departments were also tested during the exercise.

“Active participation in such exercises not only improves the functioning of the administration, but also ensures the safety of the common man,” said the Deputy Commissioner.

Under “Operation Shield”, mock drills were organised at the Mini-Secretariat, general hospital, Arpan institute and Jan Seva Sansthan.

It was explained and demonstrated how the injured were treated and rescue operations were completed after a bomb blast.

Officials/volunteers of Civil Defence, Police, District Red Cross Society, Home Guard and NCC participated in the exercise.

The injured were taken out of affected areas by adopting various means and they were given first-aid at a health centre built by the Red Cross Society. The injured were sent to hospitals for further treatment.

The operation at the Mini-Secretariat was conducted under the leadership of Platoon Commander Deepak Sangwan, while Platoon Commander Abhishek led it at the Civil Hospital, Platoon Commander Subhash at Jan Seva Sansthan and Havildar Sonu at Arpan institute.

First-aid was provided by a team led by District Red Cross Society Secretary Shyam Sunder.
