The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Monday took out a protest march in the city over farmers’ issues and served the state government a seven-day ultimatum to resolve these. The party warned of launching ‘jail bharo’ agitation if the government failed to act within the deadline.

Led by INLD supremo Abhay Singh Chautala, the party workers and farmers earlier gathered at Mansarovar Park and marched to the Mini-Secretariat, where they submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner. Chautala while addressing the protesters said the government was being unfair to the farmers, who were the food providers of the nation and were now completely distressed. “Rainwater has been stagnating in the fields for over four months, but no arrangements have been made for its drainage. The farmers are worried as they are unable to prepare for sowing the next crop. The paddy crop has already been damaged, and now they are unable to begin the next sowing. The BJP government is breaking the backbone of farmers,” he said.

Chautala further alleged that farmers were neither getting timely access to fertilisers, seeds, and pesticides nor were their produce being purchased from mandis. “The farmers are sinking deeper into debt while the state government remains in a deep slumber,” he remarked.
