The team took samples of food items and sent them to a laboratory in Chandigarh for testing. Food Safety Officer Dr Amit Chauhan said on the directions of Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration and Deputy Commissioner Parth Gupta, the teams inspected a number of popular shops. He said 50 samples were also taken from shops in Radaur, Vyaspur, Sadhaura and Chhachhrauli towns and sent to the laboratory.

“The department’s focus was on milk, milk products and sweets. During the inspection, most shopkeepers were found to be operating with FSSAI licences and registrations,” said Chauhan. He said the notices were issued to some shops that lacked licences. The SDMs and Tehsildars concerned also accompanied the teams in the sampling process. Parth Gupta directed the officials of the Food and Drug Administration and other departments concerned to conduct surprise inspections of sweet shops to check quality, weight and storage conditions of the ingredients used in the sweets. He said playing with the health of the common people would not be tolerated under any circumstances. “Due to high demand of customers on Diwali and other festivals, sweets sellers often do not hesitate in using adulterated ghee, milk or other fake ingredients,” said Parth Gupta.

He directed a thorough inspection of the cleanliness, freshness and food safety standards and directed the sweets sellers to adhere to these standards. He also appealed to the sweets sellers to maintain cleanliness, purity, and quality during the festival. “Strict action will be taken if any irregularities are found,” said the DC.
