He was addressing a gathering on the occasion of the ‘Akhil Bhartiya Devsthanam Sammelan’ in Kurukshetra.
A number of saints, including Gita scholar Swami Gyananand, from various shrines and tirthas had reached Kurukshetra to participate in the sammelan, organised as part of the International Gita Mahotsav.
The Vice-President said, “Kurukshetra stands for the great victory of dharma over adharma. Kurukshetra is also known as the land of the Vedas. Preached by Lord Krishna to Arjuna, Gita is more than a religious scripture; it is a universal manual for righteous living, courageous action and enlightened consciousness.”
Emphasising on character building, the Vice-President said, “Building a strong character is the most important aspect of any human being. Character is more important than wealth or other worldly achievements. The Bhagavad Gita enlightens the path to building a virtuous and strong character. Lord Krishna reminds Arjuna that strength of character arises from clarity of purpose, steadiness of mind and commitment to righteousness. Krishna also calls upon all of us to do our karma without attachment to its results.”
“Lord Krishna’s message of always focusing on karma guided by dharma is the key to your meaningful and purposeful life. The land encourages us to work with commitment, purity of intention and inner freedom without letting success inflate and failure weaken us. Lord Krishna gives timeless message that life is short, the world is impermanent, live without ego, fulfil your duty with humility and dedication and serve the people to the maximum possible extent. In an age of rapid change, and uncertainty, these teachings offer a guiding light", he said.
Expressing hope that in an age of rapid change, the Gita would continue to guide individuals, societies and nations toward peace and harmony, the Vice-President highlighted its enduring relevance.
He hailed the Mahotsav as a platform that reinforces the values that have sustained Bharat for centuries — dharma, duty, self-discipline and the pursuit of excellence. These values, he said, form the foundation of the national vision of an aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We have to work for ourselves and at the same time work for the society and others. The Gita is for the ages. Let us resolve to internalise the Gita’s timeless call to act with righteousness, to seek knowledge, embrace peace and to contribute to the well-being of humanity,” he said.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that only a society that preserves its cultural heritage can impart strong moral values to its youth. In this spirit, the state government is deeply committed to safeguarding and passing on Haryana’s rich cultural legacy, the birthplace of the Vedas, Puranas and the Gita to the younger generation.
The Chief Minister stated that just as the Vice-President serves as the guardian of constitutional traditions, saints and mahatmas serve as the custodians of India’s eternal traditions and spiritual heritage.
