A group of youths who were a part of the Kanwar Yatra were electrocuted early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to eight at Tigaon village here.

The mishap took place around 5:30 am when the victims, who were travelling in a truck, arrived at a particular place near a private college in Tigaon to pick up some youths before proceeding towards the destination. There they came into direct contact with a high- voltage power line passing overhead.

It is reported that as the driver parked the vehicle on one side of the road, the electric current hit the youths. While some of the occupants managed to jump off the vehicle, nine persons received burn injuries before the power supply was disconnected and passersby rushed for help. All the injured were rushed to the hospital and one of the youths, identified as Nitin (20), hailing from Tigaon village, succumbed to his injuries.

The previous night, the victims had a DJ music system installed in the truck and were to return from Haridwar on July 2.

Gajender, a kin of one of the victims, blamed the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) for the incident, claiming that the power lines passing overhead were defective and loose, hanging close to the ground. All the complaints lodged with the department concerned have gone unheard so far. He demanded the registration of a case against the officials of the Power Department.
