Karnal enters 2025 with high hopes for completion and beginning of big projects
As 2025 begins, Karnal residents and authorities are looking forward to progress across various sectors, from infrastructure to healthcare and sports. Residents’ expectations are high over the completion of many long-stalled projects, including the inauguration of a medical university and an all-weather swimming pool, that promise to enhance the facilities and quality of life in the district.

Flyovers likely to ease traffic congestion
Residents are hopeful of the swift initiation of work on elevated flyovers, expected to alleviate traffic congestion significantly. Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran XEN Dharambir confirmed that efforts to shift electric wires and poles were underway, with work likely to commence shortly.

“In the new year, we are hopeful that some major ongoing works would be completed. Some will be inaugurated in January. We will ensure timely completion of the ongoing projects. I regularly review the progress of all projects. We are confident that residents of the district will avail the facilities of several projects this year,” said Uttam Singh, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Karnal Smart City Ltd. CEO.
Work on the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay University of Health Sciences has been completed and its inauguration is expected soon. Spread across 138 acres, the university includes a 750-bed super-specialty hospital, administrative and residential blocks, nursing and physiotherapy colleges, and other facilities. Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 761.51 crore, this project aims to create a major healthcare hub in the region.
The all-weather Olympic swimming pool in Sector-32 is likely to become operational in early January. The indoor sports complex developed under the Smart City Mission at a cost of Rs 44 crore will boast of state-of-the-art amenities, including a main pool measuring 50m x 25m and a warm-up pool measuring 25m x 21m. The complex also has four badminton courts with a spectator gallery, yoga hall, cafeteria, gym and additional halls on the second floor. Equipped with heating, filtration, advanced lighting, timing system and digital scoreboard, the swimming pool is designed to host professional-level competitions.
Besides, the mixed-use development initiative, which includes facilities like the Nari Niketan building, Mahila Ashram building, commercial spaces, a working women’s hostel and an observation home is also ready for inauguration. The Nari Niketan building had already been operational, while the remaining are likely to be inaugurated in the first week of January.
The redevelopment of Karna Stadium is expected to gather pace in 2025. The Rs 23.95 crore first phase, which includes four tennis courts, a spectator gallery with a capacity of 250 and two hostel blocks with dining facilities, is expected to be completed this year. The hostels will accommodate 90 male players and 45 female players. The second phase, with a budget of Rs 12.59 crore, involves the construction of a four-storey building for fencing and gymnastics halls. While work on the tennis courts has been stalled for the last few months, officials are optimistic about completing the project within the next few months. “We are hopeful that the work on both the phases will be completed soon,” said Ramphal, GM, Karnal Smart City Ltd.

The Rs- 127.33 crore project comprises two segments — a 2.38-km stretch from Rana Academy near Sector-14-II to the Government College for Women and a 980-m stretch from Committee Chowk to Club Market.
Apart from these projects, the regularisation of unauthorised colonies, a key promise made during the Assembly elections, remains a major expectation. “We are hopeful the government will fulfill its promise this year,” said Rishi, a local resident.
Additionally, improvements in civic amenities and road connectivity are anticipated. Work on the eastern bypass, part of the city’s ring road project, is progressing rapidly, while the first phase of the western bypass is already operational.
Sources said the foundation stone of Karnal-Yamunanagar railway lines via Indri was also expected to be laid this year. The project of Maharana Pratap Horticulture University will also gain steam, said an official.
