The project, being executed in two phases, aims to provide a permanent solution to the sector’s drainage problems.
During the first phase, MC successfully laid pipelines across a 300-m stretch at an estimated cost of Rs 18 lakh. Now, the second phase is underway, involving the construction of a 250-m stormwater line from a site opposite Shanti Devi Memorial Hospital to the divider between Sector 13 and Sector 13 Extension. This phase is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs 15.5 lakh, with the selected agency given a two-month deadline for completion.
The existing stormwater pipeline, which had collapsed at several places, posed a serious safety risk to commuters and residents. The issue had been repeatedly raised by locals and former councillor Vir Vikram Kumar, prompting authorities to take action.
MC Executive Engineer Monika Sharma confirmed that work had started and would be completed within the stipulated timeframe. She explained that the new pipeline, consisting of 900 mm diameter pipes, would be connected to disposal number 1, ensuring efficient water drainage in the area.
Residents have welcomed the project, expressing hope that it will eliminate waterlogging issues and improve road conditions. Ex-councillor Kumar acknowledged the efforts of former CM Manohar Lal Khattar, CM Nayab Singh Saini, MLA Jagmohan Anand, former Mayor Renu Bala Gupta and KMC officials in addressing the problem.
Gulshan Narang, a resident of Sector 13, emphasised that the new drainage system would bring much-needed relief to the city’s oldest sector. “We hope the work is completed on time, as poor drainage has caused inconvenience to many people here,” he added.
