The Karnal Co-operative Sugar Mill has been awarded the second prize for technical efficiency at the state-level celebration of the 72nd All-India Cooperative Week started on Friday at Murthal in Sonepat. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Cooperative Minister Dr Arvind Sharma handed over the award to managing director of Karnal Cooperative Suger Mill Aditi and appreciated her leadership and consistent performance of the mill management.

The mill has seen on a remarkable growth since its major expansion was completed under the supervision of MD Aditi in 2021. Following the upgrade, the mill secured the national first prize for technical efficiency three years in a row, bringing pride to the state’s cooperative sector.

Established in 1976 on 116 acres with an initial crushing capacity of 1250 TCD, the mill began its first crushing season in 1976–77. With increasing sugarcane production in the region, the government expanded its capacity to 2200 TCD in 1991–92. However, the farmers continued to face hardship due to inadequate crushing capacity and were often forced to supply cane to distant mills.

To meet the long-pending demands of the sugarcane farmers, Union Minister and former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced a major expansion under the Chief Minister Swarna Jayanti Scheme in 2019. As a result, in 2021 the mill commissioned its modern 3,500 TCD refined sugar plant along with an 18 MW co-generation power unit. The power unit enables the mill to sell surplus electricity, generating significant additional revenue.
