During rush hours, patients face inconvenience, but after getting the new block, the situation will ease. As it will be a seven-storey building, it will have ample space and it will help in increasing healthcare facilities like MRI and cath lab. — Dr Sukhbir Singh, Civil Surgeon, Kurukshetra

The new seven-storey building and a basement will come up at a cost of Rs 88.92 crore and will be connected with the block inaugurated in 2020.

An official in the Health Department said, “The hospital is being upgraded as part of the announcement made by the Chief Minister, under which work was to be done in two phases. While the first phase was completed in 2020 when a new block was constructed at a cost of Rs 39 crore, the process for the construction of the new seven-storey building under the second phase will begin soon for which the existing building will be demolished.”

The hospital has a footfall of 1,500-2,000 patients in the OPD (outpatient department) and over 200 patients remain admitted in the in-patient department (IPD) of the hospital. Since it is a 200-bed hospital, all beds have been adjusted in the single block causing a space crunch and inconvenience to patients, their attendants and staff. New building will have private rooms, wards, store, office of Medical Superintendent, OPDs, operation theatres, laboratories and underground parking, the official said.

Currently, a dialysis centre is being run under the public private partnership (PPP) mode at the government polyclinic. After the construction of the new block, the dialysis centre is also expected to be shifted to the district Civil Hospital. Currently there is one Operation Theatre block, but after getting the new block, the hospital will have three Operation theatres, a dedicated gynaecology wing and other facilities.

Deputy Civil Surgeon and Nodal Officer for Health and Building Dr Sandeep Aggarwal said, “After the new block was constructed in 2020, OPDs and other services were shifted to the new building in a phased manner and now the old building will be demolished. The new block will help in decongesting the hospital and also in providing more facilities and services to the patients. It will be constructed by the PWD (B&R).”

Meanwhile, Civil Surgeon, Kurukshetra, Dr Sukhbir Singh said, “During the rush hours, patients and their attendants face inconvenience during movement, but after getting the new block, the situation will ease out. The lab services will improve. As it will be a seven-storey building, it will have ample space and it will also help in increasing the healthcare facilities like MRI, cath lab and other super-specialty facilities in future.”
