Land dispute turns ugly, BJP man shot in Sonepat
A BJP leader, Surender Nambardar, was shot dead at Jawahra village of Gohana in the district on Friday evening. The 42-year-old, who was recently appointed president of the Mudlana mandal by the ruling party, was allegedly attacked by an assailant who fired bullets into his stomach and head.
The police have arrested the accused, identified as Manu, a resident of the same village.
According to the complaint filed by Komal, the deceased’s wife, the incident took place around 9 pm when she, her husband and an acquaintance, Sultan, were returning home. Manu allegedly confronted them and opened fire on Nambardar. Komal and Sultan tried to overpower Manu, but he pushed her aside and struck Sultan with the pistol butt. In the meantime, Nambardar fled into a nearby shop, but Manu followed him and shot him in the head. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed in the shop.
Locals rushed Nambardar to BPS Medical College in Khanpur, where he was declared dead. Komal accused Manu, his wife, mother, uncle Balwan, and cousin Ashish of conspiring to kill her husband over a long-standing land dispute. She claimed that the dispute began after Nambardar purchased agricultural land belonging to Manu’s aunt and cousin, following which the family had repeatedly threatened him.
Inspector Mahipal Singh, SHO of Gohana Sadar, along with an FSL team, arrived at the scene. Based on Komal’s complaint, the police registered a case of murder against Manu and his family members.
Nambardar, who had previously been associated with the INLD, joined the BJP in 2021 and was appointed president of the party’s panchayati raj wing. The party recently appointed him Mudlana mandal president.
Rishikant, ACP of Gohana, confirmed that the murder was linked to a land dispute. He stated that Nambardar sustained two bullet wounds — one in the stomach and one in the head. The police have arrested Manu, the main shooter, and are conducting further investigations.
