Calling for a fair and high-level judicial inquiry into the incident, the mahapanchayat by Shaheed Y Puran Kumar (IPS) Nyay Sangharsh Morcha declared that until the accused were suspended and arrested, there was no question of allowing post-mortem or the last rites.

A 31-member committee, consisting of representatives chosen by the late officer’s family, issued the 48-hour ultimatum to the government, warning that if no action was taken within the stipulated period, the community would take to the streets.

More than 300 people attended the mahapanchayat, which was held at Shri Guru Ravidas Bhawan, Sector 20, here.

During the meeting, there were heated arguments when representatives of various organisations and political parties put forward their views regarding the police and government response after Puran Kumar’s death. One such controversial remark that caused uproar was made by former Kurukshetra MP Raj Kumar Saini.

Regarding the IPS officer's death, a spokesperson of the morcha said, “This is not merely the struggle of one family but a movement to uphold the dignity, justice and equality of society as a whole.”

Several politicians visited the bereaved family on Sunday and expressed concern over the handling of the case. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who claimed personal ties with the family, said it was “incomprehensible that an ADGP would take his own life”. Accusing the Chandigarh Police of “acting under government pressure”, he alleged that despite the recovery of a suicide note, no action had been taken against senior officials named in it.

Jannayak Janta Party leader Ajay Chautala, who also met the family, termed the situation “deeply distressing” and called for an impartial inquiry. “It is regrettable that despite an FIR being filed, the family’s statements have not been recorded. The government must ensure transparency and justice,” he said.

Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh described the incident as a “loss not only for the family but for the entire society.” He said the eight-page suicide note, which reportedly contains key facts, had not yet led to appropriate action from the Haryana Government, even six days after the officer’s death.

SIT stationed in Rohtak: Police

In a statement on Sunday, the Chandigarh Police said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been stationed in Rohtak since October 11 for a probe into the case. It said letters had been sent to the Haryana Government seeking necessary documents to aid the investigation. The police said the complainant had been requested to come forward for identification of the body to facilitate the post-mortem at the earliest, which was "essential for expediting the investigation".
