A 30-year-old man was arrested from Sirsa in Haryana for allegedly murdering a restaurant worker near the Police Control Room on the Mall in Shimla, the police said on Tuesday.

“The accused is being brought back to Shimla and will be presented in a court. A case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused and further investigation is underway,” said Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi.

As per the police, Satinder Pal, the accused, who was working in a restaurant on Mall Road since last December, had reportedly entered ‘Wake and Bake’ restaurant on Monday around 2 am with an intention of theft. He was noticed and confronted by Manish, the deceased. According to the police, Satinder assaulted Manish (20) with a chopping blade, leaving him fatally wounded. The accused then fled the spot with around Rs 45,000 and Network Video Recorder (NVR).

The family and relatives of the victim who had reached Shimla staged a protest outside the Police Control Room on Monday during which they had questioned how the incident could take place so close to the police control room and the accused managed to run away.

During the protest, the Shimla SP also held talks with them and assured them of prompt action to arrest the accused. While stating that the police had apprehended the accused within 16 hours of the incident, the SP said the police provided prompt assistance to the victim when he reached the control room. “The victim collided with the door of the control room, and the windowpane got broken. After this, the police personnel came and rushed him to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” the SP said.

Gandhi added that the police checked the CCTV footage immediately after the incident and launched a manhunt to arrest the accused. He said the police had also collected vital evidences from the crime scene. Police teams were sent to Chandigarh and Sirsa. They finally arrested Satinder from Sirsa.
