A court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh in a case involving the rape of a minor, said police officials on Thursday.

Additional and Sessions Judge Amit Garg said such offences create fear and insecurity in society and require strict punishment. The court ruled if the convict fails to pay the fine, he would face an additional six months in jail. The fine would be used for the survivor’s rehabilitation.

The police said they received a complaint on May 11, 2023, a minor girl had been lured away by a man. SP Siddhant Jain activated police teams, who traced the girl on May 18, 2023 and recovered her safely from Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Ding Mandi in Sirsa district.

The girl’s statement was recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC, and charges were framed under IPC Section 376 and the POCSO Act. The accused was arrested and sent to judicial custody the same day.
