Kumar, who was posted as IGP at Police Training Centre, in Sunaria village here, shot himself at his residence in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
According to the FIR, a liquor contractor had, several months ago, reported receiving extortion threats over the phone from a gangster. Acting on the complaint, the police provided him with security and launched an investigation.
"In June, an individual identifying himself as Sushil, and claiming to be close to the then Rohtak IGP Y Puran Kumar, contacted the contractor and summoned him to the IGP's office. There, Sushil demanded a monthly payment in the name of the IGP. He allegedly reprimanded the contractor and even threatened to implicate him in a liquor smuggling case if he did not comply," the FIR stated.
Talking to The Tribune, Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya said that Sushil was produced before a local court, which sent him to judicial custody.
The FIR further said the contractor left the IGP’s office after the meeting. In July, Sushil contacted the contractor again. Thereafter, he went to the contractor’s office, allegedly demanded Rs 2.5 lakh and promised to arrange a meeting with the IGP once the payment was made.
The contractor refused, saying he could not pay such a large sum, the FIR said. Sushil continued to pressure the contractor, but he refused to pay.
“The liquor contractor recorded the conversation and lodged a complaint with the police, along with the said recording. Following that, Sushil was arrested,” said the SP.
