Sapna’s husband, Suraj, who works as an auto-driver, was not at home when the incident occurred. Sapna and Suraj belonged to the same caste and had married over three-and-a-half years ago against their families’ wishes. The two fell in love while studying at the government school in their village, said sources.

“Around 9.40 pm, we saw in the CCTV camera that four youths were approaching the house. They barged into the house and opened fire on Sapna in her room, killing her on the spot. Sahil was in another room at that time. He was injured while confronting the assailants who fled immediately after committing the crime,” said a family member.

The police on getting information about the crime rushed to the spot and sent the body to the PGIMS for postmortem. Later, forensic expert also visited the scene of crime. Sahil’s statement was recorded on Thursday, after which the case was formally registered.

Suraj told the media that the accused had earlier threatened them because they were angry with her as she had got married toSuraj. “After the marriage, initially we lived in Rohtak for one-and-a-half years and had returned to the village two years ago,” he added.

Suraj demanded justice and urged the authorities to arrest the accused at the earliest. Meanwhile, DSP Ravi Khundia said the preliminary investigation indicated the woman was killed by her brother due to enmity over her marriage.

“Four to five shots were fired, one of which killed Sapna while another injured Sahil. Four police teams have been formed to arrest the accused. The accused have been identified and raids are being conducted to nab them,” the DSP added.
