The Rajasthan Police today arrested a 'bride' from Gurugram, who, with the help of her family, had married several young men in Rajasthan, and fled with jewellery and money. A senior police officer said the accused bride, Kajal, had been on the run for a year. She had been hiding at Saraswati Enclave in Gurugram, and was arrested by the Sikar police. Her family members had already been arrested in the case.

In May 2024, Bhagat Singh, a resident of Govardhan in Mathura district (Uttar Pradesh), had met Tarachand Jat, a Sikar resident, and proposed to arrange the marriage of his sons Bhanwarlal and Shankarlal with his daughters Kajal and Tamanna. He took Rs 11 lakh from Tarachand in the name of wedding preparations. On May 21, he arrived at a guest house with his wife Saroj, son Suraj, and daughters, and the weddings were solemnised.

Bhagat Singh's family stayed with Tarachand for two days after the wedding. On the third day, they disappeared, taking away jewellery, cash and clothes; following which Tarachand filed a police complaint. An FIR was registered in Sikar district and the investigation was assigned to ASI Puranmal.

The police arrested Bhagat Singh and his wife from Govardhan on December 18. During interrogation, it was revealed that the family was running a marriage racket. Later, the police also arrested Tamanna and Suraj, but Kajal continued to elude them. She spent some time in Jaipur and Mathura, and then moved to Gurugram.

“During interrogation, Kajal revealed that her father had set up a well-organised network. The two girls would pretend to be single and seek a match. They would seek wealthy families, where young men were not getting married. They would spend two or three days with their husbands, but would not consummate the marriage,” said the ASI.

The police suspect that the gang may have defrauded many other people. The police were now searching for other associates of the gang, he added.
