A team from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) successfully intervened to stop the wedding of a minor girl in Bansa village of the district, just 17 days before she was set to turn 18.

As per officials, all wedding preparations had been completed and the groom’s procession (baraat) was about to arrive when the CWC team reached the village. Acting swiftly, the team halted the marriage and rescued the girl in time. She was subsequently sent to the One Stop Centre for counselling and care.

CWC Chairman Umesh Chanana said the team acted on a tip-off regarding the marriage of a minor girl being solemnised in the village. After reaching the location, they found that two weddings were being organised – one of the minor girl and the other of her elder sister.

“We tried to convince the family to stop the minor's wedding, but they opposed the move. The parents gave a written statement agreeing to hand over the minor girl by 4 pm, after the solemnisation of her elder sister's marriage. The team returned temporarily and later the family handed over the girl to the CWC,” said Chanana.

However, the situation turned tense when the team first arrived, as a large crowd had gathered in the village. Despite the resistance, the CWC managed to ensure the protection of the minor and prevented the illegal marriage.
