Sub-Inspector Om Prakash of the Bhuna police station said, on November 5, Gorakhpur resident Dilbag Singh reported his brother Laxman Singh, a farmer, missing since October 31.

Laxman, who lived alone on his farmland and was unmarried, was last seen in the village on the date.

After days of searching, Laxman’s body was discovered in a plastic bag near Kajal Head in the Bhakra branch canal.

The canal had recently been drained for maintenance, and family members identified the body.

Dilbag told the police that he suspected that his nephew Vijender Singh, who had a longstanding dispute with Laxman, had murdered him.

Laxman and his brother jointly owned about three acres of farmland, part of which Vijender Singh cultivated.

The police have registered a case under sections 103(1) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

Based on evidence and technical analysis, Vijender Singh’s involvement was confirmed, and he was arrested.

He is in police custody, and will be presented before a court. Authorities said Vijender had allegedly strangled his uncle to death, and dumped the body in the canal. The body has been sent to the Fatehabad Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
