Illegal construction has damaged ecology

The Surajkund belt serves as the lungs of the city and the National Capital Region. However, the proliferation of illegal construction and commercial activities has severely damaged the ecology and natural beauty of the area. Dhanesh Adlakha, MLA, Badkhal

Adlakha highlighted the alarming rise in illegal constructions, particularly in the Surajkund area, which is part of the Aravalli forest belt and protected under the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA) of 1900. He pointed out that over the past two decades, the number of banquet halls and marriage gardens in his constituency has grown to more than 300, encroaching upon hundreds of acres of protected forest land.

“The Surajkund belt serves as the lungs of the city and the National Capital Region (NCR). However, the proliferation of illegal construction and commercial activities has severely damaged the ecology and natural beauty of the area,” Adlakha said. He stressed the need for immediate action to curb the commercialisation of forest land, emphasising its importance to the environment and residents’ well-being.

The Forest Department recently announced plans to revive its drive against encroachments, which had been on hold for 11 months due to legal hurdles and the parliamentary and state Assembly elections.

An official from the Forest Department revealed that approximately 500 hectares of PLPA-notified land in the Surajkund area remain under illegal occupation. This includes numerous farmhouses, banquet halls and commercial establishments. Despite a blanket ban on such activities, legal and technical challenges have stalled enforcement efforts.

“Many representations from owners of these constructions are still pending with the District Level Core Committee,” the official said. Adlakha urged the authorities to take decisive measures, stating that the commercialisation of forest land is a matter of grave concern for residents and the environment alike.
