The workers of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) staged a protest in support of their demands at the mini secretariat here on Monday.

The workers threatened to gherao the residence of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on September 15 if the government failed to consider their demands.

About 500 workers gathered at the mini secretariat under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Mnrega Sahyog Manch, Haryana. They raised slogans against the state government accusing it of backtracking on its promises. They tried to barge into the mini secretariat building but were stopped by the police.

Later, they handed over a memorandum of their demands to an administrative officer.

Secretary of MNREGA Union Ram Avatar said they have been struggling for their demands for the last five years. “The chief minister had given us assurance during a meeting in 2017 but the demands still remain unfulfilled,” he said.
