On the initiation of proceedings against party leader Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, state Congress president Rao Narender Singh said the BJP was indulging in politics of malice and revenge.

He said, "The BJP's strategy of intimidating and suppressing our top leadership and reviving old, already dismissed cases has been exposed before the public. The BJP is forgetting that the Congress leadership is in the hands of a family that has always placed the interest of the nation above everything and has never hesitated to serve, dedicate, and even sacrifice their lives for it. Such petty political vendetta can neither disturb the Congress nor weaken the firmness of our resolve.”

He further stated that the case was “baseless and politically motivated". Such allegations could never stand the test of time, he said, adding that the veil of falsehood would lift on its own.
