Having faced brickbats for the collapse of sanitation system in Gurugram, the newly elected BJP MLAs of the district have swung into action, promising to make the city free of garbage.

Taking the lead in Gurugram city, MLA Mukesh Sharma has launched a 100-day campaign ‘Swacch Gurugram, Swasth Gurugram’ promising to clean the entire city within 100 days. Sharma not just met Municipal Corporation officials, but has also been visiting key vulnerable garbage points and getting sanitation workers to clean such areas.

He is personally supervising cleanliness of the city and has even set up a personal grievance redress system. He has shared a Whatsapp helpline, asking residents to inform him about any sanitation crises in their respective areas promising a response within 24 hours.

“Sanitation is currently the biggest issue for the city. Wherever we went while campaigning, people complained about garbage only. There is no proper lifting in many areas and many important points in the city and villages have been made illegal secondary dump yards. We promised them resolution of the issue and managed to get mandate for the third time. We have given a 100-day promise to people and ultimatum to ourselves and the MCG. We have already started cleaning key spots and regulating garbage lifting. We are also posting our own team to ensure there is no illegal dumping,” said Mukesh Sharma, while he got Sadar Bazar cleaned by sanitation workers.

Badshahpur MLA Rao Narbir has got in touch with the MC, Gurugram, and MC, Manesar, and launched mega sanitation drives in his area. Narbir, who has been vocal about the alleged inefficiency of civic officials, has issued a warning to officials, threatening strict action in case of laxity.

“The MCG and MCM has led to the sanitation crises. It’s because of their failure that the party and us were embarrassed while seeking votes. Type Gurugram on Google and you will only see garbage images. The ‘Kudagram’ will now have to be turned back into Gurugram and we are on it. We have set up our direct helpline to get to know key sanitation issues. We will then get councillors to resolve the issues,” said Narbir.

Notably, even former Chief Minister and Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who was the face of civic mess in the city during election campaigns has announced his ambitious plans for ‘Millennium City 2.0’. Khattar has announced that sanitation crisis of the city would be resolved by December with setting up of Waste to Energy (WTE) plants and clearance of landfill site.
