The MCH took the decision as the town has been struggling to deal with the cleanliness and disposal of waste from homes and market places during the festival season. In an attempt to take the ongoing cleanliness campaign to every household, the MC firstly engaged the National Cadet Corps (NCC) volunteers who organised a cleanliness awareness rally in which NCC wing students from DN College participated.
The rally was flagged off by Mayor Praveen Popli and Municipal Commissioner Neeraj while the Commanding Officer of third Haryana Battalion Colonel Sunil Kataria attended the meeting. The rally carried out through Parijat Chowk, Rajguru Market, Jindal Park, Barwala Road conveyed the message of cleanliness through flex banners and posters. After the visit, the students and staff committed that they would ensure waste segregation at home and encourage others to do the same.
The students from Government College and FC College have also been involved to act as cleanliness ambassadors and raise awareness among the public. Municipal Commissioner Neeraj also announced that the schools performing exceptionally well in the cleanliness campaign would be honoured by the MC.
After the meeting, Ranjana, a BA first year student of Government College said she had volunteered to participate in the cleanliness drive. “To me, cleanliness is part of our daily life which we must practice religiously. There are a number of my fellow students in the colleges who have agreed to volunteer for the campaign in their respective homes and localities,” she said.
The MC’s Special Sanitation Officer Harbir also held a meeting with principals and directors of private schools to ensure schools’ active participation in making the city clean and beautiful. It was decided that each school form a “Swachhata volunteers” team and send the details of the students to the municipal corporation.
The MC Commissioner said to keep up the momentum, the MC had also decided to organise various competitions and activities related to cleanliness to be organised in all schools during the first week of October. These include poster making, waste-to-art, poetry writing, shramdaan (voluntary labour), awareness rallies and awareness camps. These creative activities aim at helping children understand the importance of cleanliness and implement it in daily life.
He said a meeting was also held with coaching centre owners with the objective of educating students about the nuances of waste management and train them as “Swachhata volunteers.” The Commissioner said these volunteers would create awareness in their homes, coaching centres and neighbourhoods about not throwing waste in the open, segregating waste, and the harmful effects of single-use plastic.
Neeraj said, “Our goal is to make Hisar a clean and beautiful town where no garbage is seen on the streets. For this, everyone’s cooperation is essential. I hope that the cleanliness ambassadors emerging from colleges, schools and coaching centres will take this mission to every resident.”
