High drama prevailed in Tauru block of Nuh as farmers, who have been protesting the orbital rail corridor, forced shut the construction work today. They have been sitting on a protest since early this year against the non-payment of compensation for a tunnel being built through their fields in Sahsola subdivision.

They alleged that the police pushed and abused women and farmers present at the protest site. Soon, local villagers joined the farmers. Raising slogans against the Railways and the administration, they marched on to block roads. It was only after SDM reached the spot that they gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to accept their demands, failing which they would permanently shut down the construction.

“The farmers will lose their land as the tunnel will run under it. The authorities say there is no provision for compensation for tunnels. They have been sitting on a protest for the past two months, but nobody cares to address the issue,” said farmer leader Azad Khedi Kankar. The police refuted the allegations of manhandling farmers, saying they were getting aggressive and the police ensured there was no ruckus.
