On first day, 20 sell land for Rewari AIIMS project

The district administration authorities on Monday finally started buying land of Majra village here for the much-awaited AIIMS project, while the AIIMS Sangharsh Samiti decided to hold its core committee meeting on Tuesday to review its decision of the proposed protest outside the house of Cooperative Minister Banwari Lal in Bawal on July 10.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ashok Garg welcomed the land owners by offering them sweets in Kund town here. The state government has purchased the land for Rs 40 lakh per acre.

“Around 20 residents of Majra village sold their land for the AIIMS project on the first day. The payment will be deposited in their bank accounts within 24 hours. The entire land-buying process will be completed within a week in order to execute the project at the earliest,” Garg told The Tribune.

Residents of Majra village had offered to sell over 200 acres for the project several months ago. They also uploaded details of the land on the government web portal. The AIIMS Sangharsh Samiti, while accusing the government of deliberately delaying the buying process, had announced to hold a protest on July 10 in a bid to mount pressure on it.

Babu Lal of Majra village got the first land sale deed registered for the project. Later, other sellers expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister Manohar Lal and Union Minister Rao Inderjit to start buying the land.

The CM had announced the project while addressing a rally at Bawal town in 2015, but it did not materialise due to the matter pertaining to the Centre. It forced the AIIMS Sangharsh Samiti to stage a dharna for 127 days to pressurise the government for executing the project. Later, in 2019 just before Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to set up the AIIMS here, but the project was yet to be executed even after three years.

Sheotaz Singh, chief of the Sangharsh Samiti, said they hailed the district authorities to start buying land for the project. “This was the purpose for which we had been mounting pressure on the state government for a long time. Since our demand has been met, we have called a meeting of our core committee in Rewari tomorrow to discuss the proposed July 10 agitation,” said Singh.
