Padma Shri winner Gurvinder Singh of Sirsa district is an example of courage and dedication for social service, despite being wheelchair-bound following an accident.

Singh set up Bhai Kanhaiya Manav Sewa Trust in 2005, at the age of 27, when he saw a group of volunteers serving people at a hospital in Ludhiana, where he, too, was admitted after the mishap. He dedicated his life in service of the homeless, disabled, destitute and accident victims.

In 2008, he started an ambulance service for accident victims. With nine ambulances, they have served over 3,000 victims. The trust has also set up a school for poor children, where education is free of cost. The trust has also been running a shelter home for the destitute and homeless women and children.
