Residents of Madanpur village and Tilak Colony in Pehowa are overjoyed that a girl from the neighbourhood is set to become the wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The news came as a surprise for friends of Dr Gurpreet Kaur. They recalled their association with the family. While the family is at its Mohali residence, the house in Pehowa wore a deserted look. Dr Gurpreet’s father Inderjeet Singh in an agriculturist and has around 50-acre land in Madanpur in Pehowa. He has also been the village sarpanch.

Dr Gurpreet’s paternal uncle Gurinder Singh, who also lives in Pehowa, said, “I got a call from my younger brother and he informed me that Dr Gurpreet is getting married. We are happy and are getting congratulatory messages. I will meet them and give my blessings.”

“Dr Gurpreet has two elder sisters, who are married and settled abroad. Dr Gurpreet was an intelligent and obedient girl. All three daughters are doing good. On Dr Gurpreet’s insistence, around a year ago, they bought a house in Phase VII, Mohali. Inderjeet keeps coming here. He is a religious person and has been the sarpanch of Madanpur,” he added.

Gurinder, who is also an Aam Aadmi Party leader, had been a Zila Parishad member. He had contested the Assembly elections as an Independent candidate from Pehowa.

Meanwhile, Dr Gurpreet’s neighbours at Tilak Colony said they were happy that she was getting married to the Punjab Chief Minister. “We have seen her since her childhood; she is a bubbly girl. It is a matter of happiness for Pehowa that the Punjab CM will be the son-in-law of Pehowa,” they said.

Gaganjot Sandhu, INLD leader and son of former Haryana Agriculture Minister Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, said, “I have seen this family closely. They came to Pehowa around 1947 from Ludhiana. Dr Gurpreet’s father Inderjeet Singh is a nice person. He and my father were schoolmates. The family enjoys a good reputation here. As the news broke, the marriage became the talk of the village. It is a matter of pride for us.”
