PGIMS reserves 20 beds for HMPV patients

Although no cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in the region so far, the authorities at Pt BD Sharma PGIMS here have made arrangements to address the potential outbreak.

"Fifteen beds for isolation and five beds equipped with ventilators have been reserved for patients suffering from HMPV. A room in the accident and emergency block has been designated for HMPV-infected patients. All healthcare workers in the OPD have been instructed to wear face masks and use hand sanitiser,” Dr SK Singhal, PGIMS Director, told ‘The Tribune’ on Wednesday.

He said samples from patients would be collected on the third floor of the OPD, and the Microbiology Department had been directed to send reports to the Medical Superintendent's office upon identifying any case. Additionally, the heads of all department had been requested to promptly share details of any suspected case, he said.

Dr Singhal said HMPV was not a new virus. Cases of HMPV infection had been reported in previous years, too, and the infection was treatable. Instead of panicking, people should take precautions to protect themselves, he said.

“A meeting of doctors from various departments was held to prepare for potential HMPV cases. The meeting also resolved to conduct a special programme at Ch Ranbir Singh OPD to raise awareness about the virus. A nodal officer has been appointed to monitor the situation and coordinate, if needed,” the Director said.

Dr Kundan Mittal, Medical Superintendent, said they were prepared to treat HMPV-infected patients as all necessary arrangement had been made.

Director General (Health Services) has directed the district health authorities to ensure that a sufficient number of oxygen beds and equipment (oxygen cylinders, concentrators, etc) and trained staff were available in designated health facilities.
