Panipat, December 16

The district police seized 1,087 boxes of illicit liquor worth Rs7.6 lakh from two canters on Sunday. Sub-inspector Chhabil Singh, in-charge, CIA-III, said canter drivers, identified as Anil and Krishan of Sonepat’s Ridhau village, had been arrested.

Ateam of the CIA received a tip-off that two canters bearing Haryana registration numbers were carrying a huge quantity of liquor.

Subsequently, the team laid a naka on the NH-44 and started checking vehicles. Two canters coming from the Karnal side were stopped. The drivers claimed cattle feed was stored in the canters. Suspicious, the police searched the vehicles and found a large quantity of liquor cartons.

During preliminary interrogation, the drivers confessed that they were transporting the illicit liquor to Bihar. A case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Excise Act was registered.
