Protesting doctors examine patients in park on PGI campus

Resident doctors of PGIMS-Rohtak continued their strike for the 10th day today and staged a protest against the barbaric rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata and in support of their demand for provision of adequate security arrangements on PGIMS campus.

The doctors decided to continue their strike at a general body meeting of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA), PGIMS, held last evening.

The protesting doctors also organised OPDs and examined patients at the Dean Park, located on the PGIMS campus, on Wednesday. The MBBS students and interns also came out in support of the protesting resident doctors. “The OPDs were organised in the park to underline that the female doctors are not even secure within the hospital premises,” said a protester.

The RDA maintained that it had decided to extend the strike as no considerable progress was seen in the CBI probe; nor were any concrete steps taken regarding the security arrangements on the PGIMS campus.

The two main demands of the resident doctors include closing the entry of the labour room towards the doctors’ hostel and the path along the boys’ hostel leading to Srinagar Colony.

“A number of male attendants and drivers, who come along women patients, sit in groups in front of the labour room entrance towards the doctors’ hostel even at night. Many of them play cards and consume intoxicants. Taking advantage of the situation, anti-social elements also sit there. Due to this, the female students and doctors feel insecure,” complained the RDA.

The association decided to continue the strike until the provision of justice in the Kolkata case and adequate security arrangements on the PGIMS campus, besides implementation of the Central Protection Act for the medical professionals.

Meanwhile, members of the HCMS Association, HCDS Association and MPHW Association took out a candle march in support of the aforesaid demands.
