Living proof of the adage “Those who try never fail”, Rohtak resident Ravinder Kumar has finally achieved success in the UPSC civil services examination, securing an All-India rank of 860 in his 13th attempt.

The results of the prestigious exam were declared on Tuesday. Ravinder was only seven years old when he lost his father in 1998.

His mother, Nirmala Devi, a Deputy Superintendent in the Zila Parishad, brought him and his younger sister up.

A graduate in chemical engineering, Ravinder’s journey has not been easy.

He had previously reached the interview stage six times, and fell short of selection each time.

Undeterred by repeated setbacks, he remained steadfast in his pursuit, dedicating 13 years of consistent efforts towards his goal.

“Civil service was my childhood dream. I also had a deep interest in engineering, so I completed my BTech in chemical engineering from IIT-Roorkee in 2011. While most of my peers pursued careers in engineering after their graduation, I decided to follow my childhood ambition of joining the civil services,” Ravinder of the Prem Nagar locality told The Tribune.

In 2015, Ravinder joined the Election Commission of India as a Section Officer, and continued to prepare for the UPSC exam alongside his job.

“It wasn’t easy to prepare for such a demanding exam alongside a full-time job, but I managed it. I took a month’s leave before the exam for focused preparation and also began meditating to build mental strength,” he added.

Ravinder attributes his success to his dedication, consistent efforts and his faith in the almighty.

His message to UPSC aspirants is clear: “Don’t be disheartened by failure. It only makes you stronger and increases your chances of success. Keep giving your best, and leave the rest to God. One day, your efforts will be rewarded.”
