Resident doctors, interns observe strike at Kalpana Chawla hospital

Scores of junior and senior resident doctors, interns and students of Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCGMC) observed a strike on Friday, expressing their outrage over the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata. The medical professionals did not attend their out patient department (OPD), indoor patient department (IPD), elective and academic duties, due to which patients had to face difficulties. The strike also put an extra pressure on other staff members.

The strike was a part of a nationwide protest by doctors, who are demanding swift and stringent action against persons involved in the crime.

“The strike has affected work as we have to take care of multiple wards and ICU, along with looking after the OPD,” said a doctor.

The medical professionals staged a dharna on the premises, demanding improved safety measures for doctors, particularly women. “Such incidents should not be repeated in future. We want safety and security for women doctors and other staff members,” said a protesting student.

As the strike continued throughout the day, elective medical services at the institution were disrupted.

“The strike has affected work, but we have ensured that patients face no difficulties, especially in emergency ward. Head of Departments, gynaecologists, paediatrics and others have been instructed to ensure proper care of patients and smooth services in the hospital. Pre-clinical and para-clinical faculty have been put on alert and are sent wherever there is requirement,” said Dr MK Garg, Director, KCGMC.
