Restart NH-44 construction or we will protest: Farmers

The National Highway Sangharsh Samiti affiliated to the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh has threatened to start an agitation if the state government failed to restart the widening of the Delhi-Panipat NH-44 to 12 lanes by December 31.

The decision was taken in a meeting at Badkhalsa Memorial near Rai in on Sunday. Besides, office-bearers of the samiti and the sangh, sarpanches of many villages and representatives of trading community attended the meeting.

State Bharatiya Kisan Sangh general secretary Virender Badkhalsa said the project was started in 2015 and, to date, not even 20 per cent of the work had been completed. The company hired to widen the NH had abandoned the construction for the past two to three years.

The Delhi-Panipat NH is prone to accidents because of unfinished works and unauthorised entries. He claimed about 600 people had lost their lives in mishaps this year.

“To create awareness among the people towards their demand, the samiti will organise a motorcycle rally from Badkhalsa to the office of Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi shortly,” Badkhalsa said.
