Local residents said if the stretch of the road was not repaired immediately, it may worsen further due to seepage underneath the road and lead to a major accident.

Preliminary reports suggest that the road caved in due to a leakage in the potable water supply pipeline.

Virendra Tyagi, president of the Residents’ Welfare Association, Sector 47, said the underground water pipeline in front of the petrol pump belongs to the Municipal Corporation. This particular stretch has a high-pressure water pipeline.

This pipeline is connected with the adjoining master pipeline and supplies potable water to residential areas in Sector 38. The master pipeline belongs to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority.

“We came to know that there was a leakage in the water supply pipeline, which remained undetected. Water remained accumulated at this point for days leading to the cave-in,” he said.

Ritesh Kumar, junior engineer, Municipal Corporation Gurugram, assured the residents that the leakage in the pipeline will be repaired by Tuesday evening. A contractor has been asked to carry out the repair works.
