In a statement to the media, Selja today said that due to a breach in the Hisar-Ghaggar drain and heavy rain, thousands of acres of crops—mainly paddy, cotton, and millet—have been destroyed in Hisar, Fatehabad, and Sirsa. Several dhanis had to be vacated, while
houses in some areas were also damaged. Farmers, facing massive financial losses, were demanding immediate compensation, she said, adding that vegetable crops too had been destroyed.
In villages such as Gangwa, hundreds of hamlets were vacated, and homes damaged.
Selja blamed the crisis on poor maintenance, saying drains were not cleaned in time, leading to garbage accumulation, obstruction of water flow, and weakening of embankments. “The demand for a compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre is justified,” she said.
Selja urged the government to arrange permanent strong embankments and
drainage systems on both sides of the drain, along with regular cleaning and repairs of drains and canals before the monsoon season. “The hard work and livelihood of farmers are at stake,” she said, demanding urgent government action.
