With Sirsa MP Kumari Selja expressing her desire to contest Assembly elections, her supporters are elated in her native Uklana (reserved) constituency in Hisar district. The local Congress leaders said they have indications that she would join the electoral fray in the Assembly polls.

Selja, a six-time MP (five-time Lok Sabha MP and once Rajya Sabha) has never contested the Assembly election. “It is my wish to contest the Assembly elections this time. I have said even before the Lok Sabha polls that I wanted to play a role in state politics. It gives more opportunity to serve people in the state,” she said, adding that a final decision would be taken by the party high command.

On the chief ministerial aspirations, she said everybody can have aspirations and thus why she could not. “But these issues are decided by the party high command in the party,” she said.

However, her statement has excited her supporters back in her home constituency in Uklana Assembly segment as her native village Prabhuwala is located in this segment. Though she has been residing in Hisar town, she recently visited her home segment to thank people for their support in the Lok Sabha elections even though Uklana segment is not part of the Sirsa Lok Sabha seat where she won the recent poll.

Lal Bahadur Khowal, a native of Parbhuwala village who is associated with Selja, said they have been urging Kumari Selja to contest the Assembly polls. “There are a number of people who have been visiting her in Delhi lately and urge her to contest the Assembly polls. We hope she will join the fray this time,” he said.

Advocate Vikram Mittal, a resident of Chamar Khera village in Uklana Assembly segment, said people in the region have high aspirations from her. “We are sure she will make her debut in the state Assembly with a thumping victory in this Assembly election. People are looking up to her as a chief ministerial candidate of the Congress,” Mittal said.

People in her segment are projecting her as chief ministerial probable from the Congress. Suresh, a former sarpanch of Mugalpura village, said if Selja contested the Assembly poll, it would be obvious that she would be a strong contender for the chief ministerial post if the Congress comes to power.
