In a partial relief to commuters travelling on the National Highway-44, barricades on the service lane of the Delhi-Ambala stretch were removed in Shahabad here on Monday evening.

The national highway in Shahabad was completely blocked in view of the farmers’ call for Delhi march, causing inconvenience to commuters.

Officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said following the instructions of the district administration, the service lane had been cleared. They said there was barricading on the main carriageway and the service lane but these had been removed. The commuters coming from Delhi will now be able to use the service lane for Ambala. The barricades from the old Markanda bridge have also been removed so that the vehicular traffic coming from Thol could head towards Delhi.

The commuters who need to go Chandigarh are being advised to continue to travel via Shahabad and Saha for now.

Sources said that there was a plan to open one lane of the Ambala-Chandigarh highway as well, but later, the plan was dropped.

Kurukshetra Superintendent of Police Surinder Singh Bhoria said, “One service lane has been opened and the commuters who need to go Ambala can take this lane. The other lanes will be opened after reviewing the situation and a suitable decision will be taken by the authorities.”
