Slow lifting of wheat in Yamunanagar delays payment to farmers

Slow lifting of wheat procured by government agencies has led to delay in payment to farmers. In many cases, they have to wait for a week or even more to get their payment after selling wheat in mandis.

This is because the payment, as per government rules, is done only on the receipt of grains at the storage site of the procurement agency. Around 99,251 tonne wheat was procured at all 13 grain markets in the district till April 14. Of that, only 55,614 tonne (56.03 per cent) had been lifted till that date.

“We demand that our payment be released within 72 hours of the issuance of J-forms by the arhtiyas, and that it should not be linked to the receipt of grains at the storage site of the procurement agency,” said Sanju Gundiana, district president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union. J-form is the sale receipt for a farmer’s agricultural produce. It also serves as the income proof for the farmer.

Haryana Anaj Mandi Arhtiyas Association’s district president Shiv Kumar Sandhala said the lifting of grains should be speeded up so that farmers could get their payment on time. District Food & Supplies Controller Kushal Pal Boora, however, said, “The lifting of wheat is being done at a satisfactory pace. Till today, we have lifted about 60 per cent of procured wheat.”
